About FIND
History
A few years ago, the Arc of Chester County and the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Mental Retardation recognized a growing concern that existed among the people they serve – individuals with mental illness and developmental disabilities who resided in Chester County, PA. This concern was that the spiritual needs of their clients existed but were not being addressed. Education and housing were being provided; even the medical needs of these communities were being taken care of, but not their spiritual needs. This need was not only for the individuals they serve to attend faith services in their local communities but also that their families, friends and caregivers be able to join them at these services.
Agencies observed that by attending local worship services of their choice, their ability to network socially and be included in their respective communities also increased. It was a great win-win situation.
Rejoicing Spirits, a national outreach ministry dedicated to including individuals with developmental disabilities and their families/caregivers, was founded in 2003 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Chester County. The response from the community to the Rejoicing Spirits inclusive, adapted worship and fellowship model was extremely positive, affirming the need to advocate for spiritual inclusion of all people.
FIND was formed to help people with disabilities locate a place to worship and better equip faith communities to open their doors and hearts to these worshipers.
Mission
FIND is dedicated to nurturing the spirit of inclusion. Its purpose is to educate and empower individuals with disabilities, as well as those with whom they share their lives. FIND supports faith communities in welcoming, including, and valuing the gifts of these individuals.
